Discrimination law advice, guidance & support
We provide expert discrimination law advice to employers. We understand that navigating the intricacies of discrimination & equality law can, at times, be challenging and complex. We work closely with employers to help them create and maintain diverse, supportive and inclusive workplaces whilst at the same time minimising the potential for costly disputes to arise.
We have offices in York & Brighouse but we act for businesses and organisations throughout Yorkshire and across the UK.
THE EQUALITY ACT 2010
The Equality Act 2010 is the key piece of UK discrimination law legislation. It sets the framework for promoting equality and preventing discrimination in the workplace. The Act provides comprehensive protection against discrimination on various grounds. It was introduced with the aim of ensuring that all workers, employees and service users are treated fairly and equally.
Key Types of Discrimination
Direct discrimination: This occurs when someone is treated less favourably due to a protected characteristic such as age, disability, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
Indirect discrimination: This involves policies, procedures or practices that, although ostensibly neutral on the surface, disproportionately affect individuals with certain protected characteristics.
Harassment: Harassment includes unwanted behaviour or comments related to a protected characteristic that create a hostile work environment.
Victimisation: This is when an individual is treated unfairly because they have made or supported a discrimination complaint.
Disability discrimination: Specifically, this type of discrimination addresses the treatment of individuals with mental or physical disabilities, ensuring they are not unfairly disadvantaged in the workplace and can involve employers needing to consider and make reasonable adjustments.
